Premium lessonThe grammar of points

Yuan, Luo, and Xi

Source, connecting, and cleft: the three groups that solve half of all cases.

18 min
Lesson 3 of 27
Course: Acupuncture II

How it starts

Three groups of points, one per channel in each group, with three uses that do not overlap: the Yuan point tonifies and diagnoses, the Luo point connects, and the Xi point resolves acute conditions. Together with the five Shu points from the previous lesson, you now have a toolbox that is enough for most cases.

The rest of the lesson opens with Acupuncture II.

In this lesson you will learn

  • Name the twelve Yuan points and use them both to tonify and to assess.
  • Apply the Yuan-Luo technique with sound judgment.
  • Choose a Xi point for acute, painful presentations.
  • Tell when each of the three categories is the right one.

A systematic tour of the fourteen channels and their points: categories (Five Shu points, Yuan, Luo, Xi, Mu, Back-Shu, Hui, confluent), the pathway of each channel, key points with their exact locations, the eight extraordinary vessels, the extra points, and the rules for combining points.

By the end of the course, you will know how to

  • Recite the pathway of the fourteen channels and their key points.
  • Choose a point by its category, not from a memorized list.
  • Accurately locate the 120 points used every day.
  • Open an extraordinary vessel with its paired confluent point.
