Premium lessonThe treating hand

Posture, support, and economy of effort

Table height, base of support, transmission from the center, and how not to wreck your hands in two years.

Lesson 2 of 31
Course: Tuina

How it starts

This lesson comes before any technique, and that is deliberate. Tuina is physical work, and the rate of practitioners who drop out because of hand and shoulder injuries in the first few years is high. Learning Gun fa with your wrist in the wrong position means learning how to injure yourself consistently.

The rest of the lesson opens with Tuina.

In this lesson you will learn

  • Set up the table, your feet, and your trunk before applying any technique.
  • Generate force from your center rather than your forearm.
  • Adopt the two basic stances and know when to use each one.
  • Prevent the typical occupational injuries of the hand and shoulder.
  • Train a technique without harming anyone while you are learning it.

The manual therapy of Chinese medicine, taught the way a school teaches it: first posture and economy of the hand, then the fifteen basic techniques one by one with their timing and rhythm, then joint mobilization with its safety limits, and finally protocols by region and pediatric Tuina, a discipline of its own.

  • Perform the fifteen basic techniques with correct posture and rhythm.
  • Build a complete session with opening, work, mobilization, and closing.
  • Treat the cervical, thoracolumbar, and limb regions with sound judgment.
  • Apply pediatric Tuina with its specific points and techniques.
