Premium lessonThe basic techniques

Family 3 · Kneading: Rou, Na, and Nie

Techniques that mobilize tissue without sliding over the skin. The workhorse of Tuina.

Lesson 8 of 31
Course: Tuina

How it starts

This is the third family, and the one that does the most work. Its defining feature is subtle to explain and obvious to feel: the hand does not glide over the skin; it carries the skin along and drags it across the deeper planes.

The rest of the lesson opens with Tuina.

In this lesson you will learn

  • Tell kneading apart from friction by what the hand does with the skin.
  • Perform Rou fa at different depths by changing the contact surface.
  • Apply Na fa with a steady rhythm and a complete release.
  • Use the spinal pinch-and-roll, including its pediatric version.

What is inside

  1. 1Rou fa 揉法 · circular kneading
  2. 2Na fa 拿法 · grasping
  3. 3Nie fa 捏法 · pinching
  4. 4The mistakes of this family

The manual therapy of Chinese medicine, taught the way a school teaches it: first posture and economy of the hand, then the fifteen basic techniques one by one with their timing and rhythm, then joint mobilization with its safety limits, and finally protocols by region and pediatric Tuina, a discipline of its own.

By the end of the course, you will know how to

  • Perform the fifteen basic techniques with correct posture and rhythm.
  • Build a complete session with opening, work, mobilization, and closing.
  • Treat the cervical, thoracolumbar, and limb regions with sound judgment.
  • Apply pediatric Tuina with its specific points and techniques.
  • Recognize the red flags that mean you must not touch and must refer.
