Palpatory anatomy: the landmarks

The bony prominences that guide all manual work, region by region, and how to count vertebrae without error.

20 min
Lesson 4 of 31
Course: Tuina

How it starts

What we work on: Jing Jin, layers, and regions covered what you are working on, and Palpatory assessment and session plan covered how to assess it. What remains is the most basic thing, and the one that gets missed most often: knowing where you are. And for that, the starting point is not the muscle, which changes with build and posture, but the bone, which does not.

The rest of the lesson opens with Tuina.

In this lesson you will learn

  • Locate the bony landmarks of each region with confidence.
  • Count vertebrae by jumping from landmark to landmark, without accumulating error.
  • Locate the Back-Shu points from their landmark instead of a long count.
  • Palpate the landmarks of the upper and lower limb that guide your work.
