Name and classical tradition
Huizong, 会宗, is the «meeting of the principal». 会 (會) is to meet; 宗, the lineage, the ancestor, what is principal and revered. The usual reading ties it to its category: it is the Xi-Cleft point (郄穴) of the Triple Energizer, the place where the channel's Qi gathers and concentrates in depth, and which the tradition uses in acute conditions. Another, modern gloss holds that yang Qi converges here at its highest level.
Unlike the transport points of the channel, which appear in the Ben Shu of the Lingshu (Spiritual Pivot), Huizong is first recorded in the Zhenjiu Jiayi Jing (Systematic Classic of Acupuncture and Moxibustion) of Huangfu Mi, in the third century. This is consistent with the history of the Xi-Cleft points, which were systematized later than the Five Shu points. No alternative names are known for it.
