Name and classical tradition

Touwei, 头维, is the “corner of the head.” 头 is the head, and 维 (維) here has the sense of corner or vertex, the same as in the classical expression 四維, the four corners of the world. It can also be read as “to support” or “to delimit.” The point lies at the corner of the forehead, in the angle formed by the hairline, and the name places it at this boundary of the head.

Secondary sources refer it both to the Zhenjiu Jiayi Jing (Systematic Classic of Acupuncture and Moxibustion) and to the Lingshu (Spiritual Pivot), chapter Jing Mai, without a confirmed literal citation. It is a triple crossing point, where the foot Shaoyang and Yangming meet the Yang Wei Mai. The reference works give it an alternative name, 顙大, “large forehead,” which reinforces its location.

Do you use ST8 with your patients?

In the Clinic you record it in the patient's file, next to the tongue, the pulse and the measurements, so at the next session you know exactly what you used. The Atlas is built in.
