Name and classical tradition

Zhongzhu, 中渚, is the «middle islet». 中 is the center; 渚, the islet or sandbar that forms in the middle of a stream. The classical reading in the repertories ties the name to its place in the transport sequence: the point sits at the center of the series, and Qi flows around it the way water flows around an islet. There is another modern gloss, with no classical citation, that speaks of the dust of the earth settling here.

The Lingshu (Spiritual Pivot), in the Ben Shu chapter (本輸), places it «本節之後陷者中也», in the depression behind the joint, on the back of the hand between the fourth and fifth metacarpals. It is the Shu-Stream point (輸穴) of the channel, which in the yang channels corresponds to Wood. The repertories give it the alternative name 下都, «lower capital».

It is worth telling three similar names apart: Zhongzhu, the islet of the hand; TE9, Sidu, the four rivers of the forearm, and GB32, Zhongdu, the watercourse of the thigh.

Named functional sets from the school: here the point does not act on its own, but through the role it plays within the maneuver.

  • Open the Water PassagesPregnancyClears the course of the water from top to bottom: CV9 separates the fluids, SP15 and ST25 open intestinal transit, TE3 mobilizes the Triple Energizer as a waterway, CV3 commands the Bladder, and BL67 closes the channel at its extremity.
  • Tonify the Triple EnergizerTreats the TE both as an organ and as a pathway: BL22 is its Back-Shu point and BL39 its lower He-Sea point; ST36, ST37, and ST39 are the lower He-Sea points of the three abdominal organs; TE3 and TE6 open the channel itself.

Each pattern with its tongue, its pulse, the treatment principle and the points to tonify and disperse. Made for the treatment table, not the bookshelf.

Do you use TE3 with your patients?

In the Clinic you record it in the patient's file, next to the tongue, the pulse and the measurements, so at the next session you know exactly what you used. The Atlas is built in.
